    Analysis and comparison of microscopic traffic flow models with real traffic microscopic data

    The ever more widespread use of microscopic traffic simulation in the analysis of road systems has re-focussed attention on sub-models, including car-following models. The difficulties of micro-simulation models in accurately reproducing real traffic phenomena stem not only from the complexity of calibration and validation operations but also from the structural inadequacy of the sub-models themselves. These drawbacks both originate in the scant information available on real phenomena, due to the difficulty of gathering accurate field data. In this study, the use of K-dGPS instruments allowed trajectories of four vehicles in a platoon to be accurately monitored in real traffic conditions, both on urban and extra-urban roads. Some of these data were used to analyse the behaviour of four microscopic traffic flow models which differed greatly both in approach and complexity. The effect on model calibration results of the choice of performance measures was first investigated and inter-vehicle spacing was shown to be the most reliable measure. Model calibrations showed results similar to those obtained in other studies that used test track data. Instead, validations resulted in higher deviations compared to previous studies (with peaks in cross-validations between urban and extra-urban experiments). This confirms the need for real traffic data. On comparison, all the models showed similar performances (i.e. similar deviations in validation). However, if surprisingly the simplest model performed on average better than the others, the most complex one was the most robust, never reaching particularly high deviations

    Is “Unconsummated Marriage” still an appropriate term? A snapshot of reality

    The most shared definition of Unconsummated Marriage (UM) refers to “the failure to perform successful sexual intercourse at the beginning of the marriage. UM usually occurs in the first few nights of marriage and so it is frequently referred to as “honeymoon impotence” or “wedding night impotence”. In the Middle-Eastern (MES) and Western (WS) societies, sexuality follows different patterns in terms of meaning and rules. Moreover the evolution of societies all around the world created new contexts and kinds of relationship. This could hamper a correct taxonomy of such sexual dysfunction where a social variable seems crucial. Aim: To analyze and review data on UM all around the world, to understand if in different societies it refers to the same situation. Method: A review of published literature on UM from 1970 to date, was conducted. Results: Substantial difference emerged from MES to WS. In MES, sexuality is allowable only in marriage, while in WS sexuality and relationship are not strongly linked. This could suggest that the term “marriage” is unable to cover the phenomenon in such different countries. Moreover, the average time before the consultation, causal attribution and prevalence are very different in Western and Middle Eastern countries. Conclusion: We found that the term “first attempts dysfunction” could be better used to describe male, female or both difficulties related to ignorance about sexuality or state/performance anxiety. On the other hand over the individual category of sexual dysfunctions, we suggest a new term as “Unconsummated relationship”, where individual difficulties toward sexuality are involved creating a couple’s dysfunction.     Engineered biomedical nanoparticles (NPs) administered via intravenous routes are prone to associate to serum proteins. The protein corona can mask the NP surface functionalization and hamper the delivery of the NP to its biological target. The design of corona-free NPs relies on our understanding of the chemical-physical features of the NP surface driving the interaction with serum proteins. Here, we address, by computational means, the interaction between human serum albumin (HSA) and a prototypical monolayer-protected Au nanoparticle. We show that both the chemical composition (charge, hydrophobicity) and the conformational preferences of the ligands decorating the NP surface affect the NP propensity to bind HSA

    Cluster subtypes appropriate for preventing postpartum smoking relapse

    Objective: While the majority of women quit smoking either before or during pregnancy, 60 to 80% relapse in the postpartum period. The objective of this research was to examine postpartum women who quit smoking during their pregnancies and to determine the predictive factors for relapse in the postpartum period by identifying different subgroups that predict risk of relapse. Method: One hundred forty four postpartum women who were abstinent at the time of delivery were recruited. Data regarding the Acquisition Stage of Change, Decisional Balance and Situational Temptations to Smoke were assessed in the immediate postpartum period. Based on their intention to remain abstinent, 121 women identified in the acquisition-Precontemplation (aPC) group comprised the study sample. Smoking status was assessed again at 2 months postpartum. Results: A cluster analysis was performed to idenitfy subgroups of the acquisition-Precontemplation (aPC) group. Four subgroups were identified and were labeled Most Protected, Ambivalent, Risk Denial, and High Risk. Logistic regression was performed to establish external validity of the clusters. The clusters and exclusive breastfeeding were the only statistically significant variables associated with relapse at 2 months postpartum. Conclusions: The results confirmed the clusters identified in previous prevention research with both adolescents and postpartum women, The cluster profiles can serve to guide the development of a tailored intervention program

    A Martini coarse-grained model of the calcein fluorescent dye

    Calcein leakage assays are a standard experimental set-up for probing the extent of damage induced by external agents on synthetic lipid vesicles. The fluorescence signal associated with calcein release from liposomes is the signature of vesicle disruption, transient pore formation or vesicle fusion. This type of assay is widely used to test the membrane disruptive effect of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, antimicrobial peptides and RNA and is also used on synthetic nanoparticles with a polymer, metal or oxide core. Little is known about the effect that calcein and other fluorescent dyes may have on the properties of lipid bilayers, potentially altering their structure and permeability. Here we develop a coarse-grained model of calcein that is compatible with the Martini force field for lipids. We validate the model by comparing its dimerization free energy, aggregation behavior at different concentrations and interaction with a 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) membrane to those obtained at atomistic resolution. Our coarse-grained description of calcein makes it suitable for the simulation of large calcein-filled liposomes and of their interactions with external agents, allowing for a direct comparison between simulations and experimental liposome leakage assays

    Prenatal coparenting alliance and marital satisfaction when pregnancy occurs after assisted reproductive technologies or spontaneously

    Although the coparenting relationship has been described as key in family dynamics, very few studies have assessed its development during pregnancy after assisted reproductive technology (ART). In this study, the authors compared the prenatal coparenting relationship in 33 couples who conceived through ART with that of 49 couples who conceived spontaneously, and assessed the association between marital satisfaction and the prenatal coparenting alliance. The first-time parents were met during the second trimester of pregnancy. A validated observational task (the Prenatal Lausanne Trilogue Play) was used to assess their prenatal coparenting relationship, and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale was used to evaluate marital satisfaction. No differences were observed in the two groups\u2019 global prenatal coparenting scores, but the ART couples showed less coparental playfulness than those who conceived spontaneously. Marital satisfaction was higher in women who conceived through ART. These data suggest that infertility and its treatment affect the prenatal coparenting and marital relationships in different ways

    Safety and efficacy of short-term intrapulmonary percussive ventilation in patients with bronchiectasis

    Background. Treatment of bronchiectasis includes drugs, oxygen therapy and bronchial clearance maneuvers. The aim of the current study was to assess safety and efficacy of IntrapulmonaryPercussive Ventilation when compared with usual Chest Physical Therapy in patients with bronchiectasis Methods. In two consecutive days, 22 patients underwent both Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation and Chest Physical Therapy following a randomized cross-over design. At inclusion (T0), at the end of 30-min session (T1), and after 30 min (T2) and 4 hrs (T3), side effects, heart rate, oxygen saturation rate, respiratory rate, sensation of phlegm encumbrance and dyspneameasured by visual analogue scales, were recorded. At T1, discomfort measured by visual analogue scales was also recorded. At T3, we evaluated efficacy in terms of volume (ml), and wet and dry weight (g) of sputum. Results. Side effects were not so severe as to determine study discontinuation and were similar (27%) between the two treatments. Heart rate (p<.001) and respiratory rate (p=0.047) decreased over time while sensation of phlegm encumbrance improved (p=0.026) withboth treatments. Only Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation improved (p=0.004) sensation of dyspnea and resulted more comfortable than Chest Physical Therapy (p=0.032). The two treatments caused important phlegm production without differences in total volume, and both wet and dry weight. Conclusions. In patients with bronchiectasis and productive cough, short-term application of Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation is similarly safe and effective than traditional chestPhysical Therapy with less discomfort. Further studies on cost-effectiveness of using IPV is recommended
